you wash your hands after changing a diaper
and before preparing a meal you prevent many
bacteria related diseases"

Mothers
travelling miles to receive powered milk to feed their
malnutrition or dehydrated babies is what motivated
the creation of Bom Dia Mama. Becoming completely dependant
on milk subsidies was causing the deaths of many babies.
When the mother could not reach the hospital to receive
her ration of powdered milk she simply would not feed
her baby.
We
are teaching mothers to trust what mothers have been
doing for centuries 'breast feeding". Breast feeding
changed the way mothers cared for their babies in the
crucial times of sickness in many rural villages in
Angola.
Waiting
your turn to see the doctor can take hours in the hot,
humid and mosquito infested waiting area. Babies are
sick and crying mothers are nervous and afraid but Nurse
Sybilla and volunteer Luis immediately put the families
at ease with the greeting 'Bom Dia Mama's". A brief
explanation is given as to why the children may be ill
and why Bom Dia Mama is there to help while the mothers
are waiting to see the doctor.
In
the rainy season lessons are on malaria prevention,
personal hygiene and sanitation. In times of diarrhea
lesson teach ways to recognize, prevent and treat diarrhea
before it takes your child's life.
Mothers
who can not read can be defensive and embarrassed we
address this by curriculum's specifically for people
who can not read or write. Using pictures, posters and
wooden blocks as teaching tools ensures the lesson becomes
part of their daily routine. Malnutrition, Basic Hygiene,
Vaccinations, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted
Diseases and HIV-AIDS are included.
This
program was designed in collaboration with Mundo Amore
Association and UNICEF.
